Looks like both Vulkan API and using the gpu-context=angle still cannot run 4K HDR content properly. Still choppy sadly.

Hi @Chainik and others,

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you.

Now that MPV has added Vulkun support. There was reports earlier that MPV Player might finally be able to play 4K content without too much CPU usage after new API support. The reason we need this, is because right now we have no method of playing 4K 10Bit HDR content smoothly at all. Except using the build in TV Motion Smoothness options. MPC is restricted because of ffdShow with doesn't support 10Bit HDR, so hopefully we can get SVP & MPV to work with one of the new supported API's.

I am willing to do some testing. How do I change MPV Player to use the other API's and what are the codes needed please?

The way I know right now is to create a mpv.conf file in C:\Users\YourUsernameHere\AppData\Roaming\mpv directory. Then adding lines such as --gpu-api=vulkan to use vulkan api for example. Is that correct and are there other options available here to add into the configuration file that we can use to improve performance?

I am really hoping we can get 4K content to work properly with MPV.

Any information regarding how to configure MPV player and play around with its settings will be helpful.

So I'm curious to see if implementing your method above of changing MPV's default device from GPU to CPU can increase performance.

Currently using these in the mpv.conf file, but with SVP performance is still horrible, cannot get any 4K video to run @ 60FPS without stuttering/laggy mess.

That's my question, I was hoping there are settings or changes that can be made to MPV that would allow me to run 4K HDR content without issues. But yes, MPV can't even run normal 4K with no 10Bit HDR. However, I use MPC + Madvr for normal 4K content and it works perfectly. It's ffdshow limitation that won't allow 10Bit HDR content.

So no new methods yet available for 4K HDR Content with SVP?

Hi Devs & Users,

Hope everyone is doing well here, it has been a while. Now that a lot of content (TV Shows and Movies) are being released in 4K 10Bit HDR, those of us with supported TV's would love to be able to watch content in its best quality + SVP smoothness.

The option we currently have with SVP is to run HDR content through MPV, but we all know MPV power demands are a lot stronger than MPC. And the problem with MPC, is that ffdshow is required for SVP and ffdshow doesn't support 10-Bit HDR content.

Have any of you figured out a way to decrease the demand from MPV? Any other methods we can use to run 4K HDR content with SVP smoothly?

I am running a 4790K @ 4.7GHz and a GTX 1070. I have no issues using MPC + Madvr for 1080p and 4K content. Everything runs smoothly. But as mentioned above, SVP requires ffdshow with MPC to work, and that's a problem for HDR content. While on the other hand MPV feels like it needs at least twice the CPU power to run smoothly.

Right now the option I am using is copying my HDR movies & shows to a HDD, connecting the HDD to the TV and using the TV media player to watch HDR content, but it's a hassle. On top of that, the smoothness from the TV is nowhere near as good as the smoothness from SVP.

Here are my settings below. The first picture is for 1080p content or lower resolutions. The second picture is for 4K content.

Make sure you're using GPU Acceleration with your GPU or iGPU by right clicking SVP Tray Icon --> Going to the "Application Settings" Menu, and selecting your GPU under "GPU Acceleration".

Also in the SVP Tray Icon settings, under the Outer Lighting menu set to Disabled, and under the Video Frame menu:

- Detect & Cut Off Black Bars set to Disabled (Deselect).
- Keep Aspect Ratio selected (choose this option),
- Keep Normal Size selected
(choose this option).

It's important to understand that the highest settings in the drop down menu's are not always the best settings. In most cases, each one has a different part to play, so just follow my settings and see if you like it. Depending on your hardware, if you have a high-end or upper-mid-range PC, it should be fine.

I have the 43" Sony X8000D 4K TV and I've used monitors before, but ever since I have switched to TV's it has been a much better experience.

If priority of the PC is competitive multiplayer gaming, go with a 144Hz Monitor.

If the priority is entertainment (watching movies and series) + casual multiplayer gaming + single player campaign mode gaming, then definitely go for a TV.

Keep the size around 43" as larger than that, sitting on a PC table and a chair that's 1.5 meters away you don't want something bigger.

You want a 4K TV, that can do 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling, with 10Bit HDR. Both of the TV's you suggested above have all those features. And the X85D is definitely the better TV, however the smallest size it comes in is 55".

The X80E is the new version of the X800D (also known as X8000D in the Asia Pacific region).

If you're sitting more than 3 meters away from the TV, I'd say go with the 55" X85D.

If you're sitting 1 to 2 meters away from the TV, get the 43" X80E

One final thing, the best thing about the X800D (the older model which I have) is that it came with a VA Panel, while the larger versions of the screen (the 49" and 55") both came with IPS Panels.

The VA Panel has deeper blacks, which is a big advantage. However, the colours get slightly washed out as you look at it from different viewing angles (so if you're not sitting directly in front of it, the colours get a bit washed out), for me that didn't matter at all because I am using it as a monitor, so it's directly in front of me. The IPS Panels don't have deep blacks, but their viewing angles are great.

I am not sure if the 43" X80E is still using the same VA Panels as the X800D or they switched to an IPS Panel.

So slightly above this range, you have the Samsung KS8000 55" and the newer KS8500 (which use quantum dot technology) they're better than the Sony TV's above. And if you want true deep blacks, you have to go with an LG OLED TV, but they're very expensive usually (however, they are by far the best, and jaw dropping in their quality). Every time I go to a friend of mine and watch a movie on their OLED TV, I feel like throwing my TV in the bin (even though I really like it). It takes me a day or two to readjust to using my TV again.

Stick to your price range, and in your price range I just gave you the pros and cons.

Mate, coil whine is now an issue even with nVidia since the pascal cards. My MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X under full stress has audible coil whine that's actually annoying. Which is why I never fully stress it. The idea is, whatever Madvr setting you want to use, make sure they use 70% to 80% of the GPU. The moment you go over 80% GPU usage with Madvr, you'll get coil whine, the higher, the stronger the whine, so I decrease the settings for Madvr. Also it's much quieter to keep the GPU usage below 50%, because then even the fans won't speed up and the system remains very quiet.

The idea is, the stronger the GPU, the less you need to use it. And with AMD VEGA, if you're using decent settings, assuming the cards will be as strong as the GTX 1070 or stronger, then you won't need to worry about coil whine, since you're not really stressing them that much. But if you do want to stress the GPU, and use stressful settings that give you better quality, then be prepared for some EHHHHHHHHH!!!!

It would be great if there's a little tweak somewhere that can improve the quality of masking. Would welcome such a change with open arms. I use "strong" artifact masking for all content, so I would love it if there's improvements that can be implemented.

Maybe add a new sub-menu in SVP Control Panel, under Artifact Masking, add "Enable Experimental Masking" with options (Enable/Disable). For us to test.

Definitely go for the 1800X over the 7700K if you're choosing between those two.

Are you in a hurry to build this system though? In around 1 month, AMD will release its VEGA cards. And I'm not talking about the RX570 & RX580. I'm talking about the cards that will compete with the GTX 1070 & 1080, maybe even with the 1080 Ti (but no one knows if they'll release something to compete with this).

Anyway, if you want a GPU solely for Madvr, I highly recommend you wait for the AMD VEGA cards. It depends what GPU you're currently using, but you might be disappointment with how much you can push Madvr using a GTX 1070 or 1080.

Also that way, your system will be fully AMD based. Ryzen 7 + VEGA. Who knows if VEGA will have extra advantages too if it's linked to a Ryzen CPU; it probably doesn't, but we just don't know yet.

By default, the maximum frame-rate SVP processes is 47, you can edit that and increase it to 60 FPS.

Right click SVP Tray Icon, open the Application Settings menu, then open the Additional Settings menu under that, then click on All Settings...

In that case, that last sentence is an understatement. There is definitely a BIG benefit with a 106" projector. I believe it will be a bigger difference than going from 720p to 1080p.

You need to download something from the same source to test the difference. For example; The Grand Tour episodes can be found in both 1080p (5GB+) and 2160p (22GB+).

It depends on how big your screen is... For example on a 32 inch TV or even bigger, a 43 inch TV, you'll definitely notice the difference between a 4K video being downscaled to 1080p and just a normal 1080p video. On a 27" monitor, I wouldn't say there's no point. But it's much less noticeable.

Well you shouldn't be having this problem with it enabled. So I recommend you figure out what's causing the issue for it to crash with full-screen mode enabled. Does it happen only with Madvr using full screen?

I have no issues running the Creators Update since yesterday. The first thing I done after updating was use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove all the drivers, and install the latest drivers from nVidia. I am planning on doing a clean install of Windows 10 Creators Update, but too lazy right now, might do it in a week or so.

This is very strange, your system is more than strong enough to handle 120FPS. Something is wrong, somewhere. Having seen the replies, I have by Chainik, he already explored most options for you.

Okay first of all don't set SVP to fixed FPS of 120. Set it to 5x video framerate.

Use MPC (Media Player Classic) + Madvr (in Madvr setting, go to rendering tab on the left menu, and then under it in Smooth Motion, make sure you enable it and select ALWAYS).

Right click SVP and go to video frame menu... select (choose both) KEEP Aspect Ratio and KEEP Normal Size... Untick (deselect) detect and cut off black bars.

Right click SVP and go to Outer Lighting menu... select disabled.

Right click SVP and go to Additional Settings menu... Go to GPU Acceleration and make sure you choose your GTX 1080 Ti

IF this fixes your issues and everything runs smoothly. Ask @Chainik to show you how to edit the full settings to make you choose 6x framerate. Because 6x framerate will be smoother than 5x. Your CPU should handle it.

I have a 4790K @ 4.6Ghz and a GTX 1070 and I can easily run 1080p content upscaled to 4K at 4x the framerate.

Native 4K content though is a different story.

EDIT:

OH and finally I forgot, right click desktop, go to nVidia Control Panel, go to Mange 3D Profiles on the left menu at the top, then go to Program Settings and find MPC, under Power Management Mode, choose Prefer maximum performance. And obviously make sure you're using the current latest drivers from nVidia.

Thanks man, it would be great if you can look into it and somehow improve performance for 4K content. At least with MPV.

With MPC it's fine,but even MPC, with 10-Bit 4K content it can't handle it either. Not a big issue since I stopped downloading 10-bit 4K content.

MPV seems way too demanding for me every time I try it, at least for 4K Content anyway, which is what I do most my testing with now after I got a 4K TV.

4790K @ 4.6Ghz is hitting 97% CPU Usage and higher, video is in constant lag. Can't handle it.

I just saw this, should make it a sticky if you're going to keep us updated here @Chainik. I will most likely test it tomorrow. Interesting new project.

I don't think it's possible with my 4 cores / 8 threads (4790K). CPU runs at ~86% with MPV, but 4K content is choppy as hell.

Great results, with more optimization on Windows from Microsoft, there should be improvements over time. Have you tried using Process Lasso and playing around with it? I purchased it a while ago and it has been installed on all my systems since I started using it.
