Topic: Using SVP with an external GPU

Hello!

I have recently purchased an external GPU to use with my laptop and SVP doesn't see this GPU. The only options I have are no acceleration or using the iGPU (HD 4000), both giving very poor results. SVP worked perfectly with my dGPU (740M); however, that is not an option anymore since it is basically disabled while an eGPU is connected. The only solution I could think of was introducing the gpu id manually, but I don't know where to find it.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Using SVP with an external GPU

it's completely up to GPU drivers installed

Information -> Add. information -> OpenCL devices
should give more info

and you definitely need to restart SVP after connecting external GPU (have no idea if it's hot-plug hmm)

BTW, which one exactly? maybe we also want to buy it smile

Re: Using SVP with an external GPU

Bad news. When you mentioned OpenCL, I remembered that GPU-Z didn't show a checkmark next to it (or CUDA). I disabled the 740M and now both OpenCL and CUDA work. SVP does see the card and can use it, but the bandwidth (x1 pci-e 2.0) is too low, making it unusable. Thought this might be the case, but wanted to give it a try anyway.

The card is a GTX 760. I bought an RX 480, but it doesn't work for some reason, so in the meantime I took my brother's GTX 760 and gave him my RX 480. Works fine for games, not so much for SVP.

1920*1080*2*60*8 *1.5 = ~ 3 Gbit/s
yeah, it may not work

Re: Using SVP with an external GPU

I tested it at 720p just to see if it works and it does indeed, it uses around 65% of the available bandwidth. Therefore, 1080p would need ~150%.

Re: Using SVP with an external GPU

this's interesting fact, thanks

however theoretical pci-e 2.0 bandwidith of 4 Gbit/s should be theoretically big_smile enough
