Reinstall did nothing. It also doesn't even trigger the error using windows media player.

You need to install all [DS_64] components. Especially this one:
> windows media player
see instruction: https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/SVP:WMP
I double checked the codec tweaker and everything is as shown in the example. After installing the component it works fine with with MPC-HC. But I would prefer to use it with WMP.

Then you need to check if your setup is correct.
Do you see ffdShow icon in the tray while playing video with WMP?
It doesn't show up in the tray. I have tested it with other players it is just WMP. I have just checked again and I can't see a wrong setting.
You need to disable DMO-decoders to make ffdShow work instead of DMO.
If instruction with Codec Tweak Tool is not working to you you need to find another way to disable DMO.

What video file are you using?
Show MediaInfo for it
I reinstalled K-Lite Codec pack and then reset the settings and now it's working. I honestly can't say what triggered this, it all seemed to happen after the update. Maybe a bug? I'll keep you updated if anything goes wrong again.
Many codec problems are caused by K-Lite. You just don't it.
There's even an answer in FAQ about it: https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/FAQ#I_ins … .2C_why.3F
