Topic: High FPS frame stuttering

Issue: Exceeding 100 or so hz on any type of content makes it a stuttery mess with constant speedups/slowdowns EVEN IF the SVP index is perfect at 1.0

System :
RTX 3080, Ryzen 3900xt, 32GB ram with a 4k 144hz HDR + G sync monitor.

Content also speeds up slightly, not sure why.

I've tried toggling the number of threads and gpu acceleration with no luck.

Try to enable SVP Tearing test line while playback. SVP menu: Utilities - Fluency and tearing test
This line must move smoothly without any jerks.

Your display must have refresh rate equal to video frame rate.
So for 144hz mode at your monitor you need 144 fps video frame rate. It gives you maximum smoothness.

As for "speeding up a little", this is the first impression of smooth playback.
Do you hear speed up in audio and do you hear audio desync?

My display is variable refresh due to G-sync, but I can cap it to 144hz which is its usual max limit.

Setting it to 144fps output in SVP results in massive stuttering, despite having a 1.0 SVP index. The Fluency and tearing test shows the line jerking and freezing when set to 144fps output.

After some further investigation I've found some more information:
problem seems to be limited to MPC-HC, VLC works fine.


The audio and video do go out of sync sometimes, when watching 4k native content. Is it realistic to expect my hardware + SVP to be able to interpolate 4k 30 to 4k 144?

VLC can't do 144 fps at all cause it's limited to 72 fps (i.e. x3 rate)

Okay, not using VLC anymore.

I tried using MPV and the results are MUCH better, seems to have fixed the problem.

I get mild occasional stutter when pushing 4k30 to 4k144, but dropping down to 4k100 or so fixes it.

It seems like the issue was just MPC HD and VLC not playing well with SVP.

This results in another issue unfortunately, where the image is very dark when using SVP + MPV, but MPV only works fine.

Could it possibly be that a old install of MADVR is interfering? Before SVP I was running MPV + MADVR combo.
VLC = no 144hz
MPC-HC = stutters above 100hz
MPV = abnormally dark. Adjusting brightness or gamma does not fix it, it just overblows the image, its something to do with the background processing
