Topic: Windows 11 build 22463.1000 constant explorer crash.

Hey guys,

I have emailed support about this one, just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting SVP4 (latest) working with Windows 11. Every time I load it into system tray, it will randomly crash Windows Explorer. It completely closes everything, which I then restart explorer and it all comes back.

My Windows 11 version is 22463.1000

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor/32GB ddr4, gtx1060

This happens regardless of idle or playing videos. I've literally installed just windows and then SVP4, and it starts happening. If I close SVP4 it stops.

Any help is appreciated.

since everything is working fine on Windows 7, 8 and 10, I consider this as a Windows 11-beta 's issue, not ours

No problem. I've been testing dozens of progs on 11 to see what is working, but SVP4 was the only one that had these symptoms. It's one of my favourite programs so thought I would share my experience. Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried if SVP4 works on the now released non beta windows 11 version?
I think anyway the official okt 4 release was not beta.

I plan to install windows 11 soon because i really want to try out Auto HDR.
And SVP is a must have.

I came to this thread here because of this problem. I am using the final version of Windows 11 and SVP4, also in the latest version.

Random crashes of explorer. The taskbar disappears and only comes back when I restart explorer.exe.

Uninstall ffdshow --> switch to AVSF (https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Avisynth_Filter_(AVSF))

Though I personally can't reproduce crash on a clean W11 install...

Thanks for the update Chainik you are doing great service as always, this is all great info.

I had planned on a fresh install anyway.
And AVSF is superior anyway for SVP's frame serving needs.

I will be interesting to see some updates from some of the other users here, if they have upgraded from an old OS install and/or if the ffdshow uninstall fixes there problem.

I think I tracked down the issue after hours of playing (well maybe only 2), it is the SVPTube that does it I disabled this and since the explorer has not crashed.    The fault looks like:

Application Settings->Additional options->Extentions->SVPTube (I disabled it here)

I also think that disabling hiding the SVP Icon in the tray helps reduce the issues as well (but I can not prove that), while SVPTube definitely has a huge impact on crashing, it does not fix the issue entirely, definitely helped however perhaps less communications with explorer.exe?

Log output when explorer cashes, and always a reference to explorer when it does:

Every time I see "VideoPlayer: new instance found in explorer.exe but SVP can't talk to it." is a time when explorer has crashed.

which means the problem is in ffdshow (though it must ignore explorer.exe by default)
again - uninstall ffdshow!

I did remove ffdshow so I now have installed:  LAV and madvr are through other software, I can not install directshow as that installs ffdshow, so now the product does not work at all.   When I reinstall directshow 64bit I get ffdshow again, see second image, which seems to be working, but again has ffdshow.

I did try vapoursynth, but am having no luck as the script does not work, separate topic that.

add Avisynth Filter instead of ffdshow raw filter
MPC-HC bundled with SVP is using it by default since ... this spring, I guess
then you can uninstall ffdshow via Window's "Add or remove programs"

Contributing my grain of sand:

Some weeks before I installed SVP in a W11 beta version and it didn't work, it gave me 2 error boxes before the end of the installation.

Today I installed SVP in the stable W11 version (clean) and it works. What I find different is that in W10 I could play movies in 120 fps and it used to work really good (high cpu usage but understandable). In W11 if I go past 60 fps it starts to give me some stutter (unwatchable). I don't know if the problem is SVP or W11 but it is how I'm now.

Anyway I'm happy that it works.

Do you have a AMD Ryzen system?
Because it seems the current W11 releases have a massive latency bug that should be fixed soon.

windows 11 HOME OS build 22000.282 (upgrade from win 10 to win 11 via windows update)
Issue of windows explorer crashing when using SVP 4 Pro + SVPTube with FFDSHOW uninstalled remains.
Literally had it crashed within 10 mins of uninstalling ffdshow and switching to avisynth instead.

Could be related to SVPTube, my hunch tells me it's related to SVPTube "Monitor Clipboard", haven't had a crash yet since i unchecked that option. Been an hour or so.
Will update if it changes.
I have bad memory so i can't tell if windows explorer crashed with svp 4 pro + svtube opened or not... I guess ill try to pay more attention and update on that aswell...

Edit: with Monitor Clipboard unchecked and ffdshow uninstalled , windows explorer crashed.
Edit2: SVPTube disabled in the extensions & ffdshow uninstalled but SVP 4 PRO still active does indeed crash windows explorer. ran 2 days without svp 4 pro and no windows explorer crashes.

There's definately something wrong with SVP 4 PRO on windows 11 and you guys should look into it. Yes microsoft may have changed something related to the issue at hand , but only your software creates this behavior , so your software is at fault. Microsoft ain't going to "fix" it's code so that your software doesn't crash windows explorer.

Are we to be expecting an update to svp 4 pro for windows 11 to fix the windows explorer crash/reset ?

In the other topic around this you mentioned it was related to FFDSHOW and / or microsoft having issues and microsoft should be the one to fix it not you... Which seems strange as no other app or program are affected by this so called "microsoft issue" besides SVP 4 PRO.

Steps to reproduce: Windows 11 -> dual monitor setup -> launch svp 4 pro -> watch videos on your favourite browser -> wait x amount of time -> windows explorer will crash / restart.
with svp 4 pro not opened in the tray icon there is no crash related to windows explorer at all.

I've sent a report of this issue to microsoft feedback hub.

explorer crashes while "watching videos on your favourite browser" --- and SVP is the reason? sounds odd, don't you agree? big_smile

ffdshow is uninstalled from windows add or remove programs
ffdshow is removed in the additional component on svp 4 pro app
ffdshow is removed from my video player of choice MPC-HC

Using google chrome as a browser, windows explorer crashes while watching youtube videos , while watching a twitch stream with svp 4 pro app opened in the tray icon.
I use RoundedTB on windows 11 , i thought at first it was RoundedTB the issue, but after further investigation (IE uninstalling anything related to RoundedTB) closing ANY other apps besides SVP 4 Pro the crash appeard again.
It only crashes when i have SVP 4 Pro open in the tray , sometimes it can crash within 5 minutes , sometimes it can crash after a few hours , crashing is always present...
it's not just related to watching videos on a browser , it just helps make the crash appear sooner than later. Other apps that helps create the crash sooner than later are Steam and Discord.

Is there a way i can see crash logs of windows explorer or svp 4 pro reporting conflict or something so i can post them here ? Windows event viewer doesn't report any error when the crash/restart happens.


System Spec
AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
Asus x570- Pro
16gb Gskillz 3600mhz ram
Sapphire 5600XT
Virtualization is enabled in BIOS
No anti virus beside windows
no apps running beside RoundedTB which is not the culprit and svp 4 pro

as you can see there's about a 1 hour and 20 minutes between me playing a video , closing it , leaving SVP 4 PRO opened on the tray and this crash happens.
Also no idea why FFDSHOW shows up there saying it "removed an instance" it's 100% uninstalled from anywhere on my PC

Okay so from my Understanding... you CANNOT have svp4pro do it's magic without FFDSHOW.
If i don't use [DS_64] Core for DirectShow 64-bit , it doesn't work. <-- this is part of ffdshow
If i don't use [DS_32][DS_64] AviSynth Filter (AVSF) it doesn't work. <-- DS_32 is used here , it installs FFDSHOW 32 bit somewhere , which doesn't show up on windows add or remove program, but it's present in the EVENT LOG of svp 4 pro.
without those 2 DirectShow ffdshow related "core and 3rd party" the software just doesn't work.
and of course on W11 ffdshow crashes windows explorer.
This is just great.

Is there an alternative?

Wrong... "DirectShow" is not equal to "ffdshow". ffdshow is just one of many DirectShow filters, that's all. When SVP work via "Avisynth Filter" it doesn't need or use ffdshow in any way.

Open svp4pro leaving it open in the tray , go play a game with browser open watching a stream

@Chainik Yep that file seems to have fixed the issue been running it for 6 hours now and no sign of ffdshow in the event log and no windows explorer crash! I will report back if an issue arise but for now it's very promising! thank you smile
